“The power of giving is greater than the joy of receiving” – Norbert Harms

We all love receiving gifts, don’t we? Come Christmas,Birthday or any special occasion and we shower our children with gifts and goodies. However, the joy of receiving these gifts fades away in no time. But then there is a joy that can live with them for long and that is the “joy of giving”. Have you introduced this joy to your child yet?

Why giving?

Even though teaching this concept to little ones can seem challenging, a simple way of doing so is by telling them that “You have plenty, others have none” AND “Being generous makes you kind and others happy”. If you want to have happiness, you need to give happiness. If you want love, you need to give love. It’s the joy and love that we extend to others that brings true happiness.

This Christmas, let’s teach our children the art of giving through some simple methods like:

Send handmade greeting cards: Encourage your child to make greeting cards for their friends and family or for children in orphanage. If possible take them along to hand over these cards personally. They will feel accomplished and proud of their gesture.

Be the helping elf: Ask your child to help you and other family members around the house with small chores. You can call the child the “Helping Elf” and ask him or her to do simple chores like setting up the table or watering plants. The “Helping Elf” can make people around the house happy!

Support the needy: Involve your child in baking and cooking food for needy people. They can help you pack these in gift boxes and give them personally to the needy and poor people around you. This will help them value what they have and be happy about giving to others.

Read books that illustrate the joy of giving:

Read your child books with characters that experience the joy of sharing and giving to others. Discuss the concept and absorb the value.

It is very important to make a child understand that the rewards of giving are priceless. It is only in giving that you receive. No matter what your circumstances in life, you have the ability to give.
