The story of Narakasura

everyday stories

Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India.  A festival that brings a smile on everyone’s face and lights a lamp in everyone’s heart. Diwali celebrations across India are different and also have different significance.

Here is the story of a very powerful asura; Narakasura and this is the story behind Deepavali in the southern parts of India.

Narakasura, an asura, was blessed by Brahma with a boon that makes him almost immortal. Narakasura tells Brahma that if at all he should be defeated, it should be only at the hands of Bhoomi Devi, his mother, the Mother Earth.

Narakasura’s power and the boon made him too proud. Not surprisingly, he went around destructing life on earth and when that wasn’t enough, he tried to conquer the Devlok. He neither spared Indra the king of Devas nor Indra’s mother Aditi.  Aditi is angered when Narakasura snatches her earrings. She realizes that if there is someone who can stop Narakasura, it is only Sathyabhama; the reincarnation of Bhoomi Devi.

So, Indra goes to Krishna and asks for Sathyabhama’s help. With the help of Garuda the great eagle, Krishna and Sathyabhama fly to Narakasura’s castle. After many adventures and an earth shaking fight between Krishna and Narakasura, Sathyabhama decides to step in. She hurls the Sudarshana chakra at Narakasura and defeats him. Narakasura realizes his wrong doings and begs for forgiveness.  Lord Krishna blesses him saying people will remember his story forever and will celebrate the day with rows and rows of lamp.

And that is how Deepavali came to be celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil and of light over darkness. Listen to the story of how Sathyabama defeated Narakasura and her many adventures on HeyCloudy, The Story Learning App
