Tikki Tikki Tembo – Folktales from around the world

In  ancient China, there was  a small village hidden among the mountains. A woman lived there her two lovely sons . Following a popular custom, she gave her first son a long name. He was called  Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo, which meant ‘the most precious thing in the world’. The second son was simply called Chang.

Every morning when their mother went to the stream  to wash clothes, the two little boys played around an old well nearby. One day, the boys were flying a kite which whooshed past their control. They chased the kite which took them up and down.  The kite got tangled on  the roof of the well.  Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo being spry and fast wanted to reach the kite and jumped high. He almost reached it, but then SPLASH!  he fell into the well!

Chang rushed to their mother “Mother! Help!  Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo has fallen into the well.”

“I can’t hear you! Louder” his mother yelled as the stream was roaring.

“Tikki tikki tembo-no sa. . . rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip. . .” the boy stopped for breath “peri pembo has fallen into the well” the little boy huffed and puffed.

“What did you say?” his mother yelled from the stream

As Chang ran, his little body was running out of strength to yell his brother’s name. He caught hold of his breath and yelled again “Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo has fallen into the well. Help him.”

His mother heard him this time and rushed towards the well.  She sent Chang to fetch the Old man with the ladder.

Chang ran to the old man and said, “Old man!Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo has fallen into the well. Bring your ladder please”. The old man could not hear him properly.

“What are you mumbling,  little one?”, he said. “Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo has fallen into the well. Bring your ladder, please!” Chang panted for breath.

After what seemed like a long time, Chang came with the Old Man and his ladder. Finally, they  helped  Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo out of the well.
